My 500 Shadow acted the same way,cranked over strong,tried to run once then nothing but cranking. It turned out to be a rusted up cut.off switch on the right handlebar.No curent could get to the coil past this break in the system.A clean-up wasa all that was required for return to service Hope this helps in your caase.
